Carmelo "Charlie Bananas" Coppolino (June 3, 1907 – January 11, 1984) was a Labor Union Organizer[1] and allegedly a Caporegime with the Genovese crime family.[2]
Activity in and around NYC'S Waterfront[edit]
Charlie frequently associated with the likes of Anthony Scotto[3], Anthony Anastasio[4], Angelo Ieole [5] (brother of Frankie Yale ), and his own brother-in-law and fellow Union Longshoreman, Matty "The Horse" La Torre[6] [7] an alleged soldier in the Genovese crime family[8] . Coppolino was questioned as to participating in at least 8 homicides [9] [10] [11], including that of New York Police Department Patrolman Charles Sauer, [12] Policy Racketeer Louis Weber[13], and mobster Ferdinand Boccia.[14]
From the 1930s through the 1980s, Coppolino was linked to the Brooklyn docks; rising to the rank of Organizer within the International Longshoremen's Association Local 1814.[15] He was a top official and Lieutenant in Anastasio's regime representing the Genovese Crime Family interests.[16]
