Matty "Matty The Horse" La Torre (September 29, 1904 – January 11, 1985) was a Union Longshoreman and allegedly a Soldato with the Genovese crime family.[1]

Attempted Murder of Brooklyn's Numbers King[edit]

At 1:30PM on January 10th, 1935 Carmelo "Charlie Bananas" Coppolino and Matty The Horse shot Brooklyn Numbers game racketeer[2] [3], Louis Weber.[4] Weber was lured to 142 Sackett Street in Brooklyn where he was planning to buy some homemade wine. As he entered the building, the two hitmen fired at their mark. Luckily for Weber, he survived the shooting and was able to get away. It didn't take long for the police to arrive and they arrested La Torre and Coppolino after pursuing the suspects in a car chase around the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn. The two men had a sawed off shotgun, a rifle, and numerous shells in their possession once the police were able to apprehend the men. [5]

Prior to the sanctioned hit, Weber had been arrested with his two brothers in a raid on a numbers establishment at 439D Pulaski Street in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. This ultimately led the Genovese Crime Family to come to the decision that Weber had to go. His influence diminished as time went on and there were no other attempts on his life.[6] La Torre and Coppolino were never convicted of the attempted murder.

International Longshoremen's Association[edit]

In 1971, at the age of 66, Matty was identified as a Genovese Crime Family member who had infiltrated the ranks of the International Longshoremen's Association. Other mafiosi questioned in the probe were Michael Clemente, Anthony Scotto, and Carmelo "Charlie Bananas" Coppolino .[7] As Charlie Bananas trusted friend and brother-in-law, Matty the Horse was extremely influential and powerful on the docks protecting the interests of the Vito Genovese Crime family.[8]
