Carmen María Montiel Ávila is a Venezuelan and American politician and journalist.[1] She is a former beauty queen known for holding the title Miss Venezuela 1984,[2] and was the official representative of Venezuela to the Miss Universe 1984 pageant held in Miami, Florida, United States, on July 9, 1984, when she won the title of 2nd Runner Up.[3]
Career[edit]
After the Miss Universe, Montiel became part of the TV program "Good Morning Venezuela". Later, she was part of the first group of "complices" in the morning variety program Complicidades, issued in the mid-eighties in Venevisión.[4]
Montiel worked as a television news anchor at Telemundo in Houston, Texas and later became a journalist.[5]
In 2018, Montiel stood as a candidate for the Republican Party in Texas's 29th congressional district, but was defeated in the runoffs by Phillip Aronoff.[6][7]
Personal life[edit]
Montiel was born in Venezuela.[1] She studied Arts at Universidad Central of Venezuela prior to entering her first beauty pageant.[1] Montiel earned a degree in broadcast journalism from East Tennessee State University.[8] She divorced in 2013.[5]
