Carney R. Shegerian is an employment trial lawyer and founding attorney of Shegerian & Associates, Inc. His clients have been awarded two of the largest verdicts in California employment law history, and the largest racial discrimination verdict in California history.[1][2][3] Shegerian is a regular contributor to local and national news outlets regarding legal and employment matters. [4]
In 2015 Shegerian was criticized by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Rafael A. Ongkeko for failing to attend court while representing a former Warner Bros employee in an unfair dismissal case. The judge said that Shegerian's excuses were “not credible”.[5]
Major cases[edit]
Shegerian represented client Bobby Nickel in an age discrimination lawsuit brought against Staples. The case resulted in the largest employment verdict in Los Angeles legal history, $26 million.[2] Another client, journalist T.J. Simers, fought a disability discrimination/wrongful termination lawsuit that resulted in a $7.1 million verdict against the Los Angeles Times.[6][7]
Shegerian represented client Brandi Cochran, a former "The Price is Right" television show model, after she was refused work after being on maternity leave. The case resulted in a $8.5 million verdict.[8]
Shegerian is part of a team of attorneys representing clients in a case against Bikram Choudhury, founder of Bikram Yoga, in lawsuits alleging sexual assault and abuse by former employees. The lawsuit is set for trial in 2016 and has received widespread media attention due to the nature of the allegations.[9][10]
Shegerian represented 34 year old April Rodriguez who was discriminated against after seven years of employment due to a mental disability. The case resulted in a $21.8 million verdict.[11]
Shegerian represented Rite Aid store manager Robert Leggins, who was harassed, punished, and ultimately fired after sustaining a neck injury while at work during a robbery. The case resulted in a $8.7 million verdict. [12]
Shegerian represented James Duffy, a 63 year old gardener for LA's Department of Recreation and Parks for over 20 years, who was harassed at work due to a disability stemming from a 2004 work related accident in addition to his race, ancestry, and retaliated against after complaining to superiors about the same. A jury ruled unanimously in favor of Duffy and awarded him with a $3.25 verdict.[13]
Awards and nominations[edit]
In 2013, Shegerian was named the Consumer Attorneys Association of Los Angeles (CAALA) Trial Lawyer of the Year.[14][15]
Shegerian was recognized in 2013 & 2014 by TopVerdicts as having tried and won a case resulting in a top 100 verdict in the nation.[16]
