The Carolina Junior Hurricanes are a Minor ice hockey association located in Raleigh, North Carolina offering both USA Hockey Tier 1 AAA and Tier 2 AA programming. The Junior Canes have over 40 teams within the program serving nearly 700 male and female athletes from ages 7 through 19 making it one of the largest travel associations in the US.
Founded in 1987 as the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association (RYHA), the organization established minor hockey in the Triangle area by running recreational house leagues and fielding competitive travel teams. As the youth hockey population grew in the Carolinas, RYHA shifted its focus entirely towards competitive travel programming.
In 2007, RYHA partnered with the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes to officially become the "Junior Canes" with all youth teams licensed by the NHL to use the official name, logo and uniforms in competition. In addition to administrative leadership at the Board of Directors level, the NHL Canes and Junior Canes are heavily connected on the ice as well as current head coach Rod Brind'Amour and former players Justin Williams and Shane Willis are active assistant coaches within the association.
The Junior Canes won the 2019 USA Hockey Tier 2 14U National Championship, and the organization's list of former players includes NHL draftees Kasperi Kapanen, Riley Stillman, Josh Wesley and Skyler Brind'Amour.[1]
