Carretera convencional (Spanish for conventional road), also known as Carretera convencional Red de Interés General del Estado, Carretera convencional RIGE or CCRIGE) is a name of a sans-serif typeface family for road signs in Spain, Andorra and some roads in Cuba and Equatorial Guinea.[1]. There are no variants and it was originally commissioned as a weighted variation of Transport for specific use in capital letter dark text over white background.
It was originally commissioned around 1988[2] for its specific use as text in black capital letters on a white background for conventional roads and urban signalling in Spain, as noted by its original name. Legal use was definitely approved in 1999 with the publication of Norma 8.1-IC[3]. In 2015, the new regulation abolished the use of alternative typography Autopista for use on highways and expressways[4], making Carretera convencional the only signalling typography for all types of roads. The new Catálogo de señales de tráfico drafted in 2022[5] released a newly drawn version with slightly overall increased thickness and reduced kerning.
There is a commercial typeface named Traffic Type Spain D based Carretera convencional, with adjusted optics and redrawn glyphs[6]
