Playing career

Club career

AJIHL & ECSL

Casey Kubara split his time early in his hockey career between the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League (AJIHL), which is played during the Australian summer, and the East Coast Super League (ECSL), which is the highest hockey league level in NSW and one level below the AIHL. Kubara played for the Reach Rebels in the ECSL for three seasons, becoming a key squad member of the 2013–14 Reach Rebels ECSL Championship winning season when he contributed forty five points from seventeen matches. While in the AJIHL, Casey represented the Sydney Lightning for his first season before the franchise changed names to Sydney Sabres for the following two.[1]

CBR Brave

After being overlooked for a contract in the United States of America, Casey returned to Australia and linked up with the CBR Brave in the AIHL after accepting an invitation by then Brave head coach Josh Unice.[2] Although not technically his AIHL debut (Casey played one match for the Sydney Ice Dogs in 2013), Kubara started his rookie AIHL season with the Brave on 23 April 2016 against the Sydney Ice Dogs.[3] Alongside his brother Tyler, Casey soon became an important player in the Brave setup during the 2016 season posting 49 points with 16 goals and 33 assists on the way to assisting the team in reaching the Goodall Cup Final for the first time.[1][4][5][6] Casey’s 2016 points haul broke the AIHL record for a rookie and was the catalyst that led Kubara to claim both the AIHL Rookie of the Season and Local Player of the Season awards.[7]

North America

During the 2014–15 season, Casey moved to the United States of America to take up a place in the Atlanta Junior Knights setup in the United States Premier Hockey League (USPHL). Kubara played for both the Elite and Empire teams in his first season before settling into the Elite team in 2015–16 where he played in thirty six matches for a return of thirty one points.[8]

Following Casey’s successful AIHL rookie season, he moved back to the United States and joined the Philadelphia Junior Flyers in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL).[9] Kubara quickly settled back into life in the US with a number of starring performances for the Flyers which culminated in being named a EHL Star of the Week on 5 December 2016.[10][11]

International career

Kubara was first called up to the national team setup in 2013 when Casey linked up with the Australian U18 squad that travelled to Belgrade, Serbia to contest the 2013 IIHF World U18 Championship Division II Group B.[12] Kubara continued his international career in 2014 when he was selected for both the U18 Australia squad as well as the U20 squad. Casey scored his first points in Australian colours in both tournaments while his five points for the U18’s assisted the team in winning a gold medal in Sofia, Bulgaria.[13][14] 2015 was another year of achievement for Kubara at international level as the young winger won bronze with the U20’s in Jaca, Spain and first represented the senior Australian national team at the 2015 IIHF World Championships in Reykjavik, Iceland.[15][16] In 2016, Casey returned to the Australian U20’s in a leadership role as assistant captain when they travelled to Serbia.[1][17][18]

Personal life

Casey was born on 6 April 1996 in Sydney, Australia.[1] Casey has two brothers who also play ice hockey in the AIHL, Tyler Kubara who plays alongside Casey for the CBR Brave and Bayley Kubara who plays for the Sydney Ice Dogs.[19][20] Casey first took up ice hockey when he was ten years old after his local inline rink closed making the nearest ice rink closer than the next inline rink. Kubara’s favourite food is either pizza or spaghetti, his guilty pleasure is lollies, his favourite colour is mid blue, favourite pastime is football (Soccer) and he is a sports movie nut naming his favourite movies as Remember the Titans, Miracle and Coach Carter.[2]
