A concubine is a woman who lives with and has sexual relations with a man but is not in a marital relationship with him. A concubine is comparable to a man's wife, however she generally has lower status than his wife or wives. Though technically different, the words mistress and concubine are sometimes used interchangeably, especially in historical documents.
