Catherine Sozi is a Ugandan physician and diplomat. Currently, she serves as the United Nations Resident Coordinator for Mozambique, effective 1 July 2023.[1] Before that, she was the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Ethiopia.[2]
Background and education[edit]
Sozi is a Ugandan national. She was born in the Central Region of Uganda circa 1962. According to self-published data, she attended Limuru Girls School in Limuru, Kenya for her O-Level education. She then spent sometime at Gayaza High School in Uganda before relocating to the United Kingdom, where she completed her A-Level studies at Dover College, in Dover, Kent, South East England.[3]
She holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree awarded by St Mary's Hospital Medical School, based in London, United Kingdom. She also holds a Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology awarded by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. In addition she a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.[1][3]

- Prior to the United Nations (1992 - 2000)
She first worked as a general practitioner in private practice and with governments and non-government organizations in the United Kingdom, South Africa and Uganda.[1][3]
- United Nations (2000–present)
She has held leadership positions at the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), in various countries including China, South Africa and Zambia. From July 2017 until January 2020, she served as the UNAIDS Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She took up her immediate past assignment in Ethiopia in January 2020. Her work in Ethiopia and Mozambique involves coordination of humanitarian action, human rights and development pillars of the host countries, among other roles.[1][3][4]
