The Center for the Transformation of Chemistry (CTC) is an emerging large-scale research center with sites in Delitzsch and Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, that aims to accelerate the transformation of chemistry into a circular economy. The startup of the CTC began in 2023, with projections of a total of 1,000 employees by 2038. The designated founding director is chemist Peter Seeberger.
Mission[edit]
The goal of the CTC is to create a circular economy with sustainable chemistry as its foundation. A wide range of raw material sources shall be explored for a variety of products and industries, e.g. health, energy, fertilizers, consumer goods. Following the example of the technology transfer models from top international institutions, basic research, applied research and cooperation with industry shall come together in one institution.[1]
Background[edit]
In 2020, the German government passed the "Structural Strengthening Act for Coal Regions" (StStG) as a structural aid measure for the coalfields and sites affected by the coal phase-out. In order to create new prospects for the coal regions, Section 17 (29) of the StStG provides for the "establishment of one new institutionally funded large-scale research center each in accordance with Helmholtz or comparable conditions in the Saxon Lusatia and the Central German coalfields on the basis of a competitive procedure"[2]. This competition procedure was carried out under the name "Knowledge creates perspectives for the region!" by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. After around 100 sketches were submitted, a total of six applicants made it to the finals of the idea competition. The six finalists then had six months to develop their ideas and convince the selection committee with the scientific as well as economic potential of their concepts. The idea for the CTC won the competition for the Central German location[3] in September 2022. The German Center for Astrophysics was selected for the Saxon Lusatia.
Funding[edit]
Until the CTC is established as an independent institution, the Potsdam Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces is coordinating the establishment of the CTC through a project grant from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. The Federal Government, the Free State of Saxony and the Land of Saxony-Anhalt are providing a total of 1.2 billion euros for the establishment of the CTC.[3]. Of this, the federal government is contributing 90 percent, the Free State of Saxony 7 percent and the state of Saxony-Anhalt 3 percent. From 2038, the annual budget is projected to be 170 million euros[2]
Location[edit]
A CTC campus with 700 employees is to be built on the site of the former sugar factory in Delitzsch. For the construction phase, the CTC moved into interim offices in the building of the Nordsachsen district administration in March 2023. A further site with 300 employees is to be built in Saxony-Anhalt[4]. The CTC thus continues the industrial tradition of the Middle German Chemical Triangle.
