Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (also known as CMTI) is a manufacturing research and development institution in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. It is an autonomous body under the Department of Heavy Industry [3][4][5][6], Ministry of Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, Government of India. It is recognised by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, as a scientific and industrial research organisation.

Background[edit]

The Institute was conceived in 1960, and became functional in the year 1965 under the technical Collaboration with Institute for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (VUOSO), Czech Republic formerly Czechoslovakia. Various types of machine tools numbering about 40 were supplied by the Czechoslovakian government under this tie-up[7]

Campuses[edit]

CMTI main campus is located in Bengaluru and the regional center is located in Rajkot, Gujarat.

Main Campus[edit]

The main campus is located near Goraguntepalya, approximately 3 km from Yeshwantpur railway station on the Tumkur Road (National Highway 4) which connects Bengaluru and Mumbai. The main campus is approximately 5  km away from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

The main campus can be accessed by public transport buses operated by the BMTC and also accessible by the Bengaluru Metro and is nearer to Peenya Metro Station.

Publications[edit]

Among many publications, Machine Tool Design Handbook is a notable one, which is used by designers, machine tool engineers and engineering students as reference[8][9]. Manufacturing Technology Today is also a monthly technical journal published by CMTI.[10][9].
