Chaker Khazaal (Arabic:شاكر خزعل) is a Canadian Palestinian author born in Lebanon on 28 September 1987.[1] Khazaal is a Palestinian – Canadian writer active in social media networks on refugee rights and public relief activities.[2] A trilogy of stories entitled "Confessions of a War Child" was released in March 2013, and "Confessions of a War Child – Lea" in April 2014.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Born to Palestinian father Mahmoud Khazaal, his mother, Palestinian social activist Alfet Mahmood, is the eldest of his three brothers Faiz, Hadi and Hani. His grandparents were displaced from Palestine in 1948 and returned to Lebanon.[4] Chaker grew up in the Burj al-Barajneh refugee camp in Beirut, Lebanon. Chaker moved to Toronto in 2005 to start his undergraduate studies at York University.[5]

Chaker suffers from lack of attention and hyperactivity (ADHD), which he spoke of as encouraging him to move forward and did not impede him in his march forward. Chaker has stated that he is a nocturnal organism, i.e. he prefers to work and write at night while taking a nap at organized times during the day.[6]

Work[edit]

Chaker acted as an actor in several local plays in Beirut and at the age of 13, played a starring role in the film "Sugar Yaffa."[7] At age 17, he received an award from York University in Toronto for his academic excellence and high leadership skills in the study of film production and international studies.[8] He moved to Canada to learn at York University in Toronto, graduating in 2009 to join the United Nations, where he became a Refugee Rights Speaker, and was presented in the Face of Transfer Online partnership.

He left the organization in 2013 to devote his time to writing, and remained active in the rights of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon, defending the rights of Syrian refugees and others. He has received several awards, including the Leaders of Tomorrow Award from the University of York, a scholarship to supplement his science at the University, and the Innovation Award from Order of Saint Lazarus for his book "Confessions of a War Child (Section I)."
