Chamar Koli
Chamar Koli or Nich Koli Chamar is a clan of the Koli caste mainly residing in countries such as India and Pakistan. Almost all clans of Shudra varna are said to have originated from the ancient Chamar Koli clan.[1]
The main works of the Chamar Koli clan were that of a servant in the ancient times. They used to be the personal servants of higher varnas like Brahmans and Kshatriyas.[2] The other works mainly done by this caste group were: Cleaning drains, animal husbandry, as labourers, skinning dead animals, pot making and so on.[3][4]
This caste group too faced discrimination in the society due to their low status. Later, after India got independence, this caste’s condition gradually improved.[5] In an attempt to improve their social status, the Kolis adopted titles such as, ‘Koliya’, ‘Darbar’, ‘Patel’, ‘Thakor’, etc.[6][7] The people belonging to this caste are mainly found in the Indian states of Gujrat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand. At present, Chamar Kolis are included in the Scheduled Caste Groups list of India’s positive discrimination for reservation.[8][9][10]
