The Chamber Choir Musica (Musica) is a Danish chamber choir established in 1986, located in Copenhagen, Denmark. Musica consists of approx. 20 dedicated singers and is one of the top 5 amateur chamber choirs in Copenhagen. More recently, in 2019 Musica has been ranked as the world's 50th best chamber choir and 248th overall place in the world according to the Interkultur Foundation ranking system[5] Musica's trademark is a thoughtful approach to their concerts, with pieces arranged around themes. Musica also uses different modes of expression when conveying their music, such as alternate line-ups, recitations and light effects. Musica has received various awards from their successful participation in festivals and competitions. Musica is currently directed by Filipe Carvalheiro[6]

History

The Chamber Choir Musica was founded in 1986 by a group of choir enthusiasts, initially as a practice choir and eventually becoming a formal association following article §78 of the Danish constitution in 1989[7]. Musica has 10 to 20 presentations per year to the Danish community, well covered by the media[8][9][10][11] [12], and strives to participate in an international choir festival every second or third year.

Projects

  • In 2016, Musica performed a series of concerts in collaboration with a choir from Norway and a choir from Sweden.
  • In 2008, Musica performed Mozart's requiem together with the "Øresund's Baroque Orchestra".
  • In 2002, Musica was invited to perform at the Danish House in Paris to celebrate the election of a Danish chairperson to lead the European Union.
  • In 2000, Musica performed with the Symphonic Orchestra of North Sjeland, "Fynsk Forår" by Carl Nielsen, and "Forklädd Gud" by Lars-Erk Larsson.

Choir directors

At the time of Musica's foundation in 1986, it was directed by Per Rathje[13]. From 1997, the choir was directed by Roland Haraldson[14], a Swedish conductor. Since 2009 the choir has been directed by Filipe Carvalheiro, a Portuguese choir director with extensive experience in Europe and USA[15].

Musica has also hosted guest directors:

  • 1997: Morten Topp
  • 2008: Fleming Windekilde
  • 2009: Risto Joost
  • 2013: Paul Hillier
