Champa P Shetty, is an Indian film director professional, known for her works in Kannada cinema. She works predominantly on Kannada films. Champa P Shetty's journey in Kannada theater first began in 1991, when she enrolled for a Kannada theater workshop organized by Prayoga Ranga an amateur Kannada theater group. Later she became an integral part of Prayoga Ranga, here she evolved as an actor and acted in major Kannada theater productions such as ‘Mante swamy katha prasanga’, ‘Huchcheeriya Hesarina Prasanga’ ‘Santhe yalli Nitha Kabira’, ‘Siri Purandhara’ and many more theater productions directed by eminent theater directors like Suresh Anagalli, V.Rama Murthy, Walter D’Souza etc.
She was also active in activists street play productions with social concerns like eradication of alcoholism, awareness campaign on cleanliness and hygiene in slums, villages rural places etc. She has also participated in many workshops and trainings such as ‘Bidi Nataka Nirdheshakara Karyagara’ organized by State Resource Center, Karnataka. Nataka Rachana Shibira organized by Kannada Sahitya Parishat. These trainings & workshops helped her in successfully directing and organizing many street plays, woman conference as the cultural coordinator for the Bangalore Rural Literacy campaign.
Career[edit]
Her expressive voice skills offered her a career as a voice artist for feature films and documentaries. Starting with director Upendra_(actor)’s movie A (1998 Kannada film) which was released in 1998. She has lent her voice to many well known heroines in addition to major characters in over 500 movies in Kannada Language. She was awarded Karnataka State Film Award for Best Dubbing Artist (Female) for the year 2007-08 for her performance in the movie ‘Kurunadu’. Her acting prowess opened opportunities in Television where she acted in many popular Kannada television serials like Kaveri, Papa Pandu, Paramapadha, Naaku Thanthi etc.
Champa Shetty along with her husband and like minded friends started a amateur Kannada theater group Ranga mantapa in Bengaluru. The group has seen more than four Kannada theater productions. In it she achieved the feat of directing two theater productions ‘Gandhi Banda’ & ‘Akku’. Both the plays received critical acclaim and cumulatively have seen more than 100 shows all over India. The play Gandhi Banda is an adaptation of the novel of the same name. The play ‘Akku’ is concise version of three short stories written by Kannada Literature personality Dr.Vaidehi who is also a recipient of |Sahitya Akademi Award winners for Kannada. “Akku’ was, conceptualized, visualized, dramatized and directed by Champa P Shetty. The film Ammachi Yemba Nenapu. is a script evolved from the play Akku.
She is currently working on a new feature film project titled Koli Esru[1]
which has already started making names in the theater circle. It is based on the book Huccheri Koli Esru Prasanga, penned by KT Chikkana.
