From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Chandra Bhushan is a noted Indian environmentalist who is currently the President and CEO of International Forum for Environment, Sustainability and Technology (iForest).[1] Started by a group of renowned scientists and environmentalists[2], iForest is an independent non-profit environmental organisation based out of New Delhi, India, that seeks to find, promote, and scale-up solutions for some of the most pressing environment-development challenges facing India and the world.[3]

Activities

Bhushan worked with Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) for 22 years.[1] As Deputy Director-General of CSE, [4] he was handling key research and advocacy teams including teams spearheading a food safety and toxins campaign, energy and climate change, along with industrial pollution, waste management, environmental governance, and an environment monitoring laboratory, among others. [1] A researcher, writer, as well as a campaigner for sustainable development, [5] he has also written on a range of issues from climate change [6] and energy, [7] to the rights of mining-affected people and industrial pollution. [8] Currently, he writes a fortnightly column in The Financial Express [5] and monthly columns in Manorma Yearbook [9] and Gaon Connection.[10]

A change-maker, he has a highly successful track record of influencing public policy on the environment, health and inclusive development. He pushed the idea of profit-sharing with the mining-affected communities, which contributed to the creation of the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) in the mining districts. His efforts in the greening of the Indian industry have contributed to the adoption of membrane-cell technology in the Chloralkali industry to eliminate mercury pollution and stricter air pollution and water consumption standards in the thermal power sector. His work has catalyzed significant improvements in the food safety and environmental regulations of the country.[9]

Over the years, he has been a member and advisor to a variety of institutions worldwide on environmental issues including an expert member of the BASIC (Brazil, South Africa, India, China) group of countries on Climate Change.[11] In total, he has served on more than 15 national and state-level committees including the Selection Committee for the appointment of judges and expert members of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2014, committee to develop India Cooling Action Plan (2017-2019), Solid Waste Management Committee (2018), along with Urban Development Department Committees of Bihar and UP (2018 onwards). [12] Along with this, he was also the co-chair of the Technical Advisory Committee of Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), [12] which came out with the very first triple-bottom-line reporting framework. [13]

Awards

Bhushan was conferred with the Ozone Award by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2017 for his contributions towards the framing of the Kigali Amendments to the Montreal Protocol.[14]
