Chaniartoon - International Comic & Animation Festival is an annual festival about comics and animation, game design, VR, AR and projection mapping. It has occurred every year since 2017 in Chania, Crete, Greece, in mid-September.[1]
History[edit]
In 2012 the 2nd High School of Chania, with the manager Antonis Athanasakis, conducted an exhibition devoted to 6 illustrators from Chania. Elias Skoulas, Spyros Ornerakis, Andreas Petroulakis, Grigoris Niolis, Vangelis Eleftherios and Babis Kiagias decorated the school with their works. The exhibition is followed by a series of meetings held for school students with the illustrator Nikos Repoulios for the art of cartooning. The sessions will continue in 2013, with Spyros Ornerakis taking the first lessons, followed by an old Marios Ioannidis student.[2]
The courses continued, while besides young pupils, a group of adults, mainly secondary school teachers, were interested in it. This created the group that will later be called "+anima". A group of pure amateurs with no experience and relevant knowledge of animating with inspiration performed weekly meetings to create and express through the art about the art of animation. In 2014, the first short film of the +anima group is presented in the area of the Second High School. Giorgos Pogiantzis accompanied the event with a unique sound stand-up and a feast from a host of musicians.
While +anima continued making their films, in 2014, the Sketch Workshop of Chania was founded, filled with people who participate in animation, comic and cartoon lessons. A series of exhibitions are held, which host exclusively works by students of the workshop and the +anima films. A new batch of young and old people are making cartoons, comics, and small animation films. At the same time, many awards are coming. In 2015, the 2nd High School received the first prize in a nationwide competition, while in 2017, it received two awards at a film festival in England (3rd best film and also 3rd best film by a children's committee). At the same time, +anima films are selected to many festivals and screened around the world.
In 2017, the Sketch Workshop of Chania, with the group +anima, decided to proceed with the annual exhibition one step further, hosting other artists' creations. Thus, the 1st Chaniartoon - International Comic & Animation Festival is being set up, which is soon embraced not only by the Chania people, not only by the Greeks but also by the whole world. It is a fact that just days after the festival's official announcement, short animation entries from around the world surpassed one hundred. The exhibition was hosted by 25 Greek Cartoonists/Illustrators, old and new.
In 2019, Chaniartoon was the first festival of its kind that introduced the technology of Augmented Reality with in-house production of an AR application. In 2020 it was the first that had an in-house Virtual Reality application (the first Greek Immersive Virtual Reality Music Animation). For its innovations in 2020-2021, it was granted by Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
