A character artist is a visual artist that specializes in designing characters for a movie, TV show, video game, comic, or animation.[1]. The role usually involves designing characters based off of preliminary sketches or ideas, with the goal of creating iconic visual identities that portray the personality of the characters[1][2]

Character design usually involves creating multiple iterations of a character, after each the artist receives feedback from other artists or creative leads and makes changes accordingly, until the artist has created a character that visually serves its intended purpose[2]. The goal of character artists is both to create a visually appealing character and create a vehicle for storytelling[1][3].

Techniques[edit]

Character artists focus on several components, including color theory, silhouette, shape language, and exaggeration to create characters.[1]. On top of this, technical artistic skill is essential for bringing characters to life[1][3]

Character artists work with both traditional and digital art methods. Typically, preliminary studies and model sheets will be done in 2D, and for many projects character artists will create a 3D model of the character once the design is decided upon. Other times, the character artist’s work will be handed off to a 3D modeling artist.

Exaggeration[edit]

Character artists for animation, video games, and comics are given much more freedom because they are not limited to realistic anatomy[1]. This allows them to exaggerate physiological aspects of a character to show emotion or personality [1].

Silhouette[edit]

A goal of character artists is often to make characters recognizable when only a basic two-dimensional shape is shown[1].

Shape language[edit]

Certain geometric shapes tend to elicit particular emotional responses when people look at them[4]. Designing characters around these shapes can portray personality and emotion[4]. For example, Circular characters are likely to be harmless, friendly, and approachable[4]. Square characters are likely to be sturdy, strong, and dependable[4]. Triangle shaped characters are likely to be dangerous and unpredictable[4].

Color theory[edit]

Like shape language, the subconscious mind tends to assign emotional impacts to certain colors. Character designers carefully use different combinations of colors to display aspects of characters.[5]
