Chaoseum is a Swiss Nu-Metalcore band formed in 2018 in Lausanne, Switzerland that consists of vocalist CK Smile, drummer Greg Turini, and guitarists Loïc Duruz and Valery Veings. Chaoseum remains independent of a record label and their songs are written mostly in the English language.

History[edit]

Background[edit]

Chaoseum was originally formed in 2018 by members Valery Veings and Loïc Duruz, both former guitarists of the symphonic metal band ELFERYA.[1]. Until early 2019, the band consisted of Greg Turini (drums), Loïc Duruz (guitar), Lola van Lo (vocalist) and Valery Veings (guitar), also former ELFERYA members. Vocalist Lola van Lo was asked to leave the band in early 2019, and CK Smile replaced Lola van Lo as vocalist immediately afterwards in February 2019. The band is currently self-managed and works closely with professional production studios for their sound and most music videos. Chaoseum stands for “Museum of Chaos,” and while the band is mainly nu-metalcore, the members work to “live in the chaos” and incorporate many musical styles and sounds into their albums to create variety[2].

Albums and Performances[edit]

The band's first album, First Step to Hell, was released in September 2018 with Lola van Lo as vocalist. The album artwork was created by Gustavo Sazes[3], a digital artist that has worked with numerous clients in the music industry. This debut album was produced by guitarist and producer Izakar (Ex-Dagoba, Blazing War Machine)[4].When Lola van Lo departed the band in 2019, the band rerecorded the title song from the album, First Step to Hell, with new vocalist CK Smile.

In February 2019, still with Lola van Lo as vocalist, Chaoseum served as support and toured the United States with American heavy metal band Soulfly, Canadian death metal band Kataklysm and American groove metal band Incite to perform part of their first album First Step to Hell. Chaoseum enlisted the help of a large booking agency, Metal Music Bookings, to plan this U.S tour[5].

In April 2019, with CK Smile as vocalist, a limited-edition live album was recorded at the band's second live performance concert in Lausanne Switzerland - the album was released as Live in Hell – Les Docks Lausanne 2019 in September of the same year. The live concert was a performance of the first album, First Step to Hell. Also in September 2019, the band later joined Tarja (former Nightwish vocalist) for a Russia tour, where the band experienced critical success in forming a fanbase in the Russian metal scene.

In January 2020, Chaoseum performed at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, as well as the legendary Whiskey a Go Go venue in West Hollywood, California.

Less than two months later, the band released their first single “Into My Split” from their third album Second Life, which was released on September 25th, 2020, with eleven total tracks. The album artwork was again created by Gustavo Sazes[3]. In April 2021, Chaoseum released a self-produced low-budget music video for their track “Smile Again” from the Second Life album, which received international attention and garnered over 4 million views on YouTube and is their most successful music video to date. The album is about getting the chance at a second life, with sci-fi and personal influences sprinkled throughout the lyrics and sounds[6].

After months in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, Chaoseum worked to release an acoustic vinyl album titled Second Skin: Alive in Studio on June 18, 2021. Second Skin has a total of eight tracks, some are original songs created specifically for the album, the others are acoustic reimagining’s of songs from their Second Life & First Step to Hell albums. Second Skin was released as a vinyl LP as well as digitally but is not available in CD format.

In August 2021, Chaoseum performed at the Death Coffee Party[7] open air metal festival in Litoměřice, Czech Republic alongside numerous other metal bands.

On October 29, 2021, Chaoseum released a single and accompanying music video titled “Unreal” from their yet-to-be-released fifth album.

Musical style, influences, appearance, and themes[edit]

Chaoseum’s albums are written and performed in the English language, with some songs partly incorporating the band members’ native language of French. Lyrics are written by the band members who integrate personal ideals, internal struggles, and hidden feelings into their music. The lyrics typically center around mental health and deeper questions some may face without an outlet or support. All band members contribute to the composition of the music as well as the lyrics[8].

Chaoseum stands for “Museum of Chaos,” and the band works to “live in the chaos," and incorporate a wide variety of musical styles and sounds into their albums to create variety for each song to sound unique[9]. Each song may be a different style from the next. In a review from Sarah Carswell from Blind Thought[10], a Music and Literature Article, Chaoseum is also noted to incorporate different vocal styles in their music, from gritty to clean vocals found in multiple metal genres. In a 2021 review from MetalMadTV[11], CK Smile’s vocals are described to range in similarity to the vocals of Jonathan Davis (Korn) to Layne Staley (Alice in Chains) to Aaron Lewis (Staind) in his various recordings and performances. However, CK Smile is also cited for incorporating his own unique style and vocals into the band’s music to contribute to the revival of nu-metal music.

The band’s musical style has been categorized as a resurgence of the nü-metal era of metal music, with vocalist CK Smile naming Korn, Deftones, Staind, Mudvayne, and others as a few of their musical influences. The band is influenced by heavy metal, nu-metal, and metalcore sounds, and incorporates theatrical horror-film and cinema-style makeup[12] into their look and performances, each individually influenced by various characters; vocalist CK Smile notes his makeup is influenced by Jeff the Killer[13]. The band was created for and centered around theatrical live performances, incorporating the horror make-up and mashup of musical styles for audiences to experience live[14]
