Charles Douglas Eyre Dewé (2 May 1879 – 24 May 1955) was an English first-class cricketer, educator and British Army officer.
The son of William Mills Dewé, he was born in May 1879 at Kingsdown, Kent. Dewé was educated at Marlborough College,[1] before going up to Queen's College, Cambridge.[2] While studying at Cambridge, he made two appearances in first-class cricket for Cambridge University Cricket Club in 1901, playing against Surrey and Sussex.[3] He took 2 wickets in these matches,[4] in addition to scoring 33 runs.[5] After completing his studies at Cambridge, Dewé became an assistant master at Stancliffe Hall School, a post he held from 1902 to 1905. He later held the same appointment at Elstree School to 1907 and Hawtreys to 1909. He was appointed joint headmaster at St. Albans School in Lyme Regis, with the First World War interrupting his appointment.[2]
Dewé served in the war with the Gloucestershire Regiment, being commissioned as a temporary lieutenant in December 1914.[6] He served on the Western Front,[2] with him holding the temporary rank of captain at the end of war; following the completion of his service in January 1919, Dewé was allowed to retain the rank of captain.[7] He returned to teaching after the war as an assistant master at Sunningdale School from 1919 to 1926, before being appointed joint headmaster at Allen House School in Woking until 1936.[2] Dewé died in May 1955 at Fleet, Hampshire.
