Dr. Charles James Doyle is a British (Scottish) Writer and Independent Director. He is the author of the Oxford Dictionary of Marketing[1][2]and was Chief the Marketing and Communications Officer of Jones Lang LaSalle Inc from 2007 to early 2017. Doyle is currently a board member of IAM Roadsmart.[3]

Early Life & Education[edit]

Charles James Doyle was born in Glasgow to Catherine and James Doyle. Doyle is a baptised Roman Catholic, at the time schools in Glasgow were segregated between Catholics and Protestant so he attended several Roman Catholic primary schools in the west end of Glasgow (Saint Ninian and Corpus Christi) and then Saint Thomas Aquinas School[4] in the Jordanhill area of Glasgow between 1971 and 1976. Doyle excelled academically and at sports, during his school days, he played for the school football team.

Doyle attended Glasgow University[5] between 1976 and 1980, he graduated with an MA Honours degree in History and English. He was an active debater in the Glasgow University Union debating chamber. During his time in Glasgow, he won two annual class prizes in Modern History and was elected by fellow students as a member of the Glasgow University Union Board of Management. Doyle was an active sportsman while at university and played for the Glasgow University football team.

In 1980 Doyle was accepted as a postdoctoral (History) student at Oxford University[6](1980-1985), where he was supervised by Sir Colin Lucas at Balliol College. His subject of doctoral research was judicial corruption and conspiracy during the period of the French Revolution. For his field research he spent two years in French historical archives in Paris, Marseilles, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes and Avignon. After which he returned to Oxford to complete his doctoral thesis. In 1986 he successfully defended his thesis and was awarded the degree of D.Phil by Oxford University in 1986.[7] As part of Doyle’s academic life, he worked as a lecturer at Brooks University and then later on at the University of Greenwich.

Early Career[edit]

In 1985, during a time of the privatisation of the electricity supply industry in the United Kingdom, Doyle changed his career direction from an academic career to a career in public service joining the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA)[8] as part of the graduate fast track program. During his time at the UKAEA, Doyle worked on a range of strategic projects, such as nuclear fusion, collaborative Research and development(R&D) within the European Union, strategies for diversification into non-nuclear industries such as: laser and particle beam devices and aerospace. Doyle was also involved in the restructuring and corporate identity of the UKAEA at the time. (In 1989 Doyle made a brief appearance on the BBC's Money Programme speaking about the future of the UK nuclear industry.)

In 1988, Doyle left the UKAEA to join European computer and IT services corporation ICL, which was later acquired by Japanese technology giant Fujitsu. During it time at Fujitsu, Doyle was involved in the initial development of Fujitsu’s first systems integration business and worked on the marketing of network services.[9]

In 1992 Doyle joined the global services division of BT; where he was involved in both acquisitions for BT and also in partnerships with Asian and American organisations, signing up several strategic alliances for BT. Whilst at BT, Doyle developed various techniques in client intelligence and marketing programs. In 1997 Doyle joined Andersen Consulting, [10] where 2001 he was involved in the company’s transformation to Accenture and its associated marketing and brand building programs.

JLL and Clifford Chance[edit]

In 2005 Doyle landed his first Chief Marketing Officer position with the international law firm Clifford Chance.[11] Whilst at Clifford Chance, Doyle restructured the entire marketing and business development function and initiated several client marketing and development programs.

In 2007, Doyle left Clifford Chance became the Global Chief Marketing and Communications Officer and for international commercial real estate company, JLL.[12][13] Over the last decade, Doyle has transformed and modernised JLL’s approach to marketing, communications[14][15] [16] and research which included introducing social media marketing to JLL and relaunching globally integrated websites.[17] In 2014 Doyle was at the helm of global implementation of JLL’s new brand identity and logo,[18] and then a launch of a major market positioning program with the core message ‘Achieve Ambitions’.[19] Doyle later led JLL to join the World Economic Forum.[20]

Doyle is a Board level Trustee of IAM Roadsmart[21] (formerly The Institute of Advanced Motorists), a UK-based road safety charity. In 2016 he was involved in the rebrand of The Institute of Advanced Motorists to Roadsmart.[22]

Publications[edit]

Doyle is the author of the Oxford Dictionary of Marketing, which is published by Oxford University Press.[23] The Oxford Dictionary of Marketing is an accessible and wide-ranging A-Z, providing over 2,600 entries on topics spanning terms for traditional marketing techniques (from strategy, positioning, segmentation, and branding, to all aspects of marketing planning, research, and analysis), as well as leading marketing theories and concepts. By 2016 The Oxford Dictionary of Marketing[24] was in its fourth edition.[25] Doyle is the co-author together with Hugh Morris of the "The Net Effect: Rethinking the Regulatory Role of the Nation State in the Global Electronic Economy”.[26][27]

Personal life[edit]

Doyle resides in London, United Kingdom and is known to be an avid traveler. He still maintains his early interest in modern history and politics has been a member of the Labour Party since 1983. After retiring from playing 30 years of amateur football, Doyle took up golf and has won 32 amateur golf competitions in a period of 12 years. He is a member of Hankley Common Golf Club in Surrey and is currently the club champion of the Oxford and Cambridge golf society.[28]

Philanthropy[edit]

Doyle supports the road safety charity Roadsmart where he is a trustee and is known to actively supports live theatre and the arts.[29]
