Charles Frederick Hayfron-Benjamin is a Ghanaian physician, academic, and author. He holds a Doctor of Medicine (MBChB) from the University of Ghana Medical School and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Amsterdam University Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam. He is currently a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana Medical School and a medical specialist at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.
Early life and education
Hayfron-Benjamin, a native of Elmina, was born in Accra, Ghana. He had his secondary school education at Adisadel College from 1997 to 1999. In his second year at Adisadel College, he took the GCE Ordinary Level exam and had the highest grade in Physics and General Science for the Central Region (Ghana).[1] He then proceeded to the University of Ghana Medical School where he completed a Doctor of Medicine (MBChB) degree. Following this, he completed a Master of Philosophy in Physiology from the University of Ghana Medical School, and a PhD in Pulmonary and Vascular Medicine from the Amsterdam University Medical Centre, University of Amsterdam[2]. He also has dual specialist qualifications in anesthesiology from the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons and the West African College of Surgeons[3].
Career
Academia
Hayfron-Benjamin is currently a senior lecturer in physiology at the University of Ghana Medical School[4]. He also heads the pulmonary function testing unit of the University of Ghana Medical School[5]. He serves as a faculty member of the West African Genetic Medicine Centre[6]. Hayfron-Benjamin has published extensively in the fields of medicine and physiology. His research focuses on the biological basis of pulmonary and vascular dysfunction in individuals with diabetes and sickle cell disease[7].
Medical profession
Since 2009, Hayfron-Benjamin has been a practicing physician. In 2016, he was appointed a specialist in anesthesiology/critical care medicine at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital[8]. In the same year, he won the Best Medical Doctor Award (anesthesiology/critical care category) of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital[9]. Outside his hospital practice, each year, he leads a team of health workers to deliver free medical care to a population in need.
