Charles Mussry (born October 9, 1919 - August 23, 1971), was an Indonesian independence fighter and businessman from Surabaya.[1]

Biography[edit]

Charles Mussry was born to Jacob Mussry, a Baghdadi Jew from Iraq and Toba Solomon Kattan. The two met and married in Aceh. The couple's family then moved to Surabaya, a big city in Java in the early 20th century. [2]

Charles' brother, David Mussry, is a Jewish activist in Surabaya. He became the Chairman of the Association of Israelitische Gementee Soerabaja (English: Israel Congregation in Surabaya). This community was founded on July 31, 1923 by two Jewish leaders, namely Izak Ellias Binome Ehrenoreis Rechte Grunfeld and Emma Mizrahie.

In the battle of Surabaya on November 10, 1945, Charles Mussry joined the struggle with the people's armies to defend Indonesia's sovereignty. [3]

Charles Mussry died on August 23, 1971 and was buried in Surabaya. He was buried in the Ereveld Kembang Kuning Cemetery, which is managed by the Oorlog Graven Stichting (OGS) Funeral Foundation for war victims. The tombstone of Charles Mussry's grave is engraved with Hebrew.

Family[edit]

Charles married Djoedjoek, a woman from Madiun. The couple have two sons, Irwan and Jacky, and one daughter, Leitiza.
