Carlos "Charlie" Oppen Cojuangco is a Filipino businessman, politician and philanthropist. He is currently serving his second term as the Representative of the First District of the Province of Tarlac in the 18th Congress of the Republic of the Philippines.

Biography[edit]

Cojuangco was born to Ambassador Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco and Soledad "Gretchen" Cojuangco on April 14, 1963, the youngest son of the couple with siblings, Mark, Margarita and Luisa. He was married to Rio Diaz, who died in 2004, and with whom he has two children, Jaime and Claudia.

Education[edit]

Cojuangco attended the Xavier School in San Juan, Philippines and then completed his secondary education at the La Salle Military Academy in New York, USA. He then went on to attend college at the Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan. He has also gone to the Polytechnic University of the Philippines for a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and Majored in Public Administration.

Political career[edit]

Charlie Cojuangco is with the Nationalist People's Coalition. He ran under this party's banner during his first elected position – Mayor of the Municipality of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental (1992-1995) and was re-elected for a second term (1995-1998).[1]

After two successful terms serving as Mayor of the Municipality of Pontevedra, Cojuangco then ran for a seat in Congress. He was elected on his first vie for the position in 1998. He served three terms in the House of Representatives and stood as the Representative of the 4th district of Negros Occidental for the 11th to 13th Congress (1998-2007).[2]

Currently Cojuangco is serving his 2nd term as the Representative of the 1st District of Tarlac. He is currently the Chairperson of the Special Committee on Flagship Programs and Projects in the House of Representatives. He is also one of the vice-chairpersons of the House Committee on Appropriations. Finally, he is a member of the following committees in the House of Representatives: Committee on Agrarian Reform, Committee on Dangerous Drugs, Committee on Energy, Committee on Government Enterprises, Committee on Health, Committee on Higher and Technical Education, Committee on Information and Communications Technology, and the Committee on Public Works and Highways.[3]
