Charterhouse Square School is an independent, non-selective, co-educational day school with 250 children aged 3 to 11, in the Barbican area of the City of London. It occupies a five-story Victorian building overlooking Charterhouse Square near what used to be a Carthusian monastery. The school was founded by Jamie Malden in 1985 with 23 children.

Charterhouse Square became part of Cognita, a group of international private schools, in 2012.[1] It is not connected with Charterhouse School, a public boarding school which was founded near the square before moving to its current location in Godalming, Surrey.

Curriculum

In 2004 Ofsted judged that the school did not meet the requirements for registration as an independent school, because of the curriculum, the quality of teaching, and a failure to support children to be creative.[2][3] Following that, the school was judged Good by Ofsted in 2009 and Outstanding in 2012.[4][5] The school is now inspected by the Independent Schools Inspectorate; the most recent inspection was in 2023 and found that the school met the standards for independent schools.[6]

Many former pupils go on to leading independent schools in London including City of London School for Girls, City of London School, Forest School and Highgate School.[7]

Classrooms are colour-coded by age and ability rather than class.
