Chasing Dreams + Insomnia is a collaborative extended play by Hayden Forbes & Lo. It was released on May 31, 2020, by Center Spring Records. On May 27, 2020, the album was announced with the cover and tracklist. The EP features production handled by InfinitiMixes and 88BeatsProductions, with some additional production from Hayden Forbes himself.

This EP is a tribute to their friends in the Class of 2020 since their friends and the artists themselves were not able to graduate on that day. The live performances are from their Junior year of high school during Homecoming week.

These songs aided in the victory of the class that year, crushing the other classes. Junior year for the RCHS Class of 2020 will be one of the most memorable years in the school’s history.

Along with this, the newly recorded studio versions have meanings that correlate with high school. Overall, the EP encapsulates ambition, persistence to reach goals, and reflects on struggles high schoolers can deal with.

Background[edit]

Lo and Hayden both started working on music around 2016-2017. They had been best friends since late 2014 so it was only natural that the two of them had worked on songs together. After several failed attempts, Lo and their friend Griffin had approached Hayden with the idea for the song "Insomnia", a song about the fears of high school life which cause someone to lose sleep. Lo quotes the song as "...a twist on 'Chasing Dreams', cause we can't chase dreams if we can't even fall asleep. The song encaptures the feelings at night when we can't even fall asleep because we think of 'what is that person saying about me? Why did they say that? What did I do that? What is wrong with me?'" Hayden later reused this premise in the intro of the song when he said: "Yeah, I know we're always talking about "Chasing Dreams", but how can I chase dreams if I can't even get any sleep? Let's talk about it."

These songs were originally planned for a scrapped album by Hayden called "The Old-School LP", and Chasing Dreams originally had two different singers before Lo. Presented with the opportunity to perform at the Homecoming talent show during his junior year of high school, Hayden approached the advisors with the song "Insomnia". When he was told his set needed to be longer, he ran back home and finished a song he had been messing around with for a while called "Chasing Dreams". With Lo already joining Hayden for Insomnia, he figured he would just have her sing the "Chasing Dreams" parts, and have the actual singer do the parts when it was recorded. When they were chosen to represent the 2020 class for the show, the two songs were performed back to back. Performed on September 28, 2018, this was Hayden's first-ever live performance. At first, they were nervous because they had a planned performance, but it was changed due to them only being given one microphone instead of two. This caused them to perform sitting side by side instead of being able to wander around the stage. In the end, the two of them received a standing ovation and won the talent show for their class.

Following the lockdown from the COVID-19 pandemic, Hayden started looking back at the songs he never recorded due to his graduation approaching. The two of them set up a recording booth in Hayden's bedroom, relearned their parts, and recorded both tracks in one day. This was when they decided to dedicate the EP to their class of 2020. With this in mind, Hayden decided to keep Lauren on "Chasing Dreams" and have RCHS classmate Jerrod Gander mix and master to make it feel more personal. Hayden had also reached out to future college classmate Dalton Notsch to design the cover, to symbolically look toward the future with this project. Released on May 31st, the day they were supposed to graduate before it was postponed due to COVID, the EP was received positively among family and friends. The project included the two studio recordings of the songs, along with the live performance they did for Homecoming 2 years before. Hayden later released CDs on November 3, 2021, with two bonus tracks: slow and reverbed edits on the two studio recordings.
