Chemophenetics
Chemophenetics was proposed to replace the obsolete terms chemosystematics and chemotaxonomy.[1] Chemophenetics, as a subdiscipline of phenetics, covers measurable chemical aspects of overall similarity. Previously, comparative phytochemical studies based on, e.g., comparative GC, HPLC, and TLC studies, were aimed to elucidate phylogenetic relationships of, e.g. higher plant taxa. Such studies have been either termed chemosystematic or chemotaxonomic. Due to the advent of the much more powerful techniques of molecular phylogenetics, using the occurrence of natural products as systematic markers seems no longer timely, at least within the plant kingdom.
The term chemophenetics had more than 300 entries in Google Scholar[2] in October 2022. Chemophenetic research papers cover studies at the level of family and above, e.g. for ferns[3], at the generic level, e.g. for the genus Thesium[4], and the species level, e.g. within Annona emarginata[5]. In particular, in studies on hybrids, where molecular phylogenetic methods are often not giving unambiguous results, chemophenetic studies have proven to be useful in elucidating and confirming parentage, e.g. in the genera Abies[6], Doronicum[7], and Leontodon[8]
