Cheri Domingo and Greg Sanchez

On July 27, 1981, Cheri Domingo, 35, and Gregory Sanchez, 27, became the 8th and 9th murder victims of the East Area Rapist/Original Night Stalker/Golden State Killer (EAR/ONS/GSK). Both were attacked in Domingo's home in Goleta, California. Their murder has been linked to the ONS by DNA left at the scene.[1][1] The Original Night Stalker is believed to have broken into the home, which was up for sale at the time of the attack.[2][3]

About Cheri[edit]

Cheryl Grace (Smith) was born in Covina, California on June 14, 1946. She was raised primarily in the San Diego area. She was married to Roger Domingo.,[4] with whom she had two children, from 1964-1975[5] She lived in Santa Barbara County from 1975 until the time of her death and worked as an Administrative Assistant for Trimm Industries, but had been laid off shortly before her death.[6]

Cheri Domingo was 35 years old when she was killed. Her daughter Debbi (who was 15 at the time) was staying with friends on the night of the attack. Her son was out of state with other family members. The home in Goleta belonged to Cheri's family and she was staying there temporarily. Cheri had worked for Burroughs Corp in Goleta, where she had met Greg.[6]

About Greg[edit]

Greg Sanchez was 27 years old.[7][8] Greg worked as an IT technician, Burrough's in Goleta where he met Cheri[6]

About the attack[edit]

It is unknown how the Original Night Stalker selected Cheri and Greg as victims. The murders were part of a two year spate of crimes in the area, including a number of burglaries.[9][10] The attack is believed to have occurred at approximately 3-3.30am when neighbors reported hearing a gunshot and woman scream, although nobody called law enforcement.[11]

Greg had been shot in the face, but not fatally.[12] Cheri and Greg were killed with a garden tool that police could not locate.[12] Cheri had bruising on her wrists and ankles. This indicated to detectives she had been tied, although the restraints were missing. Greg had not been bound. His body was found in front of the bedroom closet. It has been theorized he lunged at the attacker although the exact events are unknown.[13]

Cheri was found on the bed with shipping twine near. Fibers of an unknown source were scattered over her body. Greg had not been tied, but his head was covered with clothes pulled from the closet.[12]

Paint specs from an unknown source were found at the scene. Law Enforcement believe the perpetrator brought the specs to the scene from his place of work, perhaps as a painter or employment which would have come into contact with the specs of paint.[14]

FBI investigation[edit]

The FBI re-launched an investigation into the murders on the June 15, 2016, 40 years after the first East Area Rapist attack.[15][16]
