Chess on a 12 by 12 board is a large-board chess variant invented by The Chess Variant Pages user Doug Vogel in December 2000..[1] As its name suggests, the game uses the same setup and rules as standard chess, but expanded to a 12 by 12 board, with the pieces set up in their usual configuration in the central 8 by 8 section. The rules are kept the same despite the larger board, with the sole exception that pawns promote upon reaching the rank where the enemy king starts. (Vogel proposes a rules variation that pawns must reach the final rank before they promote). The larger board has the effect of opening up the game as the home-rank pieces are able to move straight from the beginning of the game, allowing for more complex tactical possibilities.
The variant is one of the variants included in the chess variant software ChessV.[2] The Chess Variant Pages' play-by-email server Game Courier offers the variant[3], and it is also offered as a playable variant on the website EvoChess[4]
