Chhandak Basu

Chhandak Basu is an Indian American Professor of Biology at the California State University, Northridge. He specializes in plant biotechnology and astrobiology, studying how cells survive in extreme environmental conditions.[1].

Education and career

Basu was born in Kolkata, India. He studied B.Sc. (Agriculture) from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyala.[1] He later obtained an M.S. from Montana State University, Bozeman in the field of molecular breeding[2], followed by a Ph.D. in plant biotechnology from the University of Rhode Island[3]. He completed his Post-Doctoral studies in plant molecular genetics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.[1] His publications include: (1) publication in Science Magazine to study gene expression in poplar following environmental stresses[4], (2) publication in Trends in Plant Science to propose how weed genomics could be used for crop improvement[5], and (3) an educational paper which describes step by step qPCR primer design[6]. He also edited three books, namely, PCR Primer Design (2nd. and 3rd. editions). Biofuels and Biodiesel. Basu was a Visiting Associate Professor at the University of California Irvine. He was also a Visiting Faculty at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.[1]. His research was funded by USDA[7][8], US Department of Education and NASA[9].

Research

Basu's research mainly focuses on two aspects[10]: (1) plant abiotic stress physiology and (2) astrobiology. To study plant stress physiology, he uses traditional plant physiological methods along with next generation sequencing tools like RNAseq in his research[10]. He studied how plant cells respond to climate change, including drought[11][12], flood[13][14], heat[15][12], and salt[16]. His astrobiology research involves utilization of RNAseq to study extinct and extant life[17]. Previously his work involving biofuel and green energy involved development of first expressed sequence tags (EST) library of diesel tree[18], genetic transformation of Nostoc punctiformii[19] and E. coli[20] to produce biofuel-like compounds.
