The People's Republic of China defines its core interests (Chinese: 核心利益; pinyin: héxīn lìyì) to be its sovereignty, security, territorial integrity and interests of national development. The Chinese armed forces is the safeguard of these interests. These interests were first set out in a white paper China’s Peaceful Development, released on 6 September 2011.[1] In the white paper, these interests were further expounded thus:
China is firm in upholding its core interests which include the following: state sovereignty, national security, territorial integrity and national reunification, China’s political system established by the Constitution and overall social stability, and the basic safeguards for ensuring sustainable economic and social development.
