Chong (Max) Li (Chinese: 李崇; pinyin:Lǐ Chóng) is a Chinese-born American academic and entrepreneur. He is the founder of OORT, a decentralized artificial intelligence data cloud platform, and an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. Li is an inventor listed on more than 200 U.S. Utility Patents.
Education and career
Li completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Engineering and Information Science from Harbin Institute of Technology and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Iowa State University. He worked at Qualcomm Research from September 2012 to May 2018.[1]
In December 2016, he joined Columbia University as an adjunct professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering.[2]
In 2018, Li co-founded Nakamoto & Turing Labs, a research lab based in New York City.[2][3] He later founded OORT in 2021, a blockchain-based decentralized AI data platform.[4][5] Li is the president of the Science & Technology Economic Committee at the China-US Chamber of Commerce.[6][7] Li is also a Forbes Contributor.[8]
Li has been frequently cited in major media outlets for his views on artificial intelligence, emphasizing decentralized data infrastructure and community-driven AI ecosystems.[9][10][11][12][13][14]
Li's research interests include machine learning, distributed computing systems, blockchain, information theory, networked control and communication, and advanced telecommunication technologies. He developed the Proof of Honesty system, a mechanism for verifying data accuracy in AI applications.[15] In 2019, he published the book Reinforcement Learning for Cyber-physical Systems.[16]
