Chowman is an Indian restaurant chain based in Kolkata, West Bengal. Founded in 2010 by Debaditya Chaudhury, the chain is focused on Chinese cuisine and operates through dine-in restaurants, delivery services and cloud-kitchen formats. It began in Kolkata and later expanded to other Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR and Hyderabad.

History

Chowman was founded in 2010 by Debaditya Chaudhury in Kolkata. Mint Lounge reported that the brand was started after Chaudhury identified a gap in the Kolkata dining market between formal fine-dining Chinese restaurants and lower-priced Chinese eateries. The report stated that, within ten years, Chowman had grown to 17 restaurants in Kolkata, offering dine-in and takeaway services.[1]

According to Mint Lounge, Chowman entered Bengaluru in 2020 with three cloud kitchens. The report also noted that the business increased its focus on delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic while continuing with restaurant operations in Kolkata.[2]

Expansion

In July 2021, The Telegraph reported that Chowman had grown from one outlet in 2010 to 20 outlets and was preparing to expand outside its original Kolkata market. The report said that the company had begun operations in Bengaluru through cloud kitchens and was planning expansion to Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Hyderabad and Chennai.[3]

In December 2021, The Telegraph reported that Chowman had become a 22-outlet chain and had undertaken a rebranding exercise as part of its national expansion plans.[4]

In June 2022, The Telegraph reported that Chowman had expanded beyond Kolkata to Bengaluru and Delhi. The report stated that the chain had five restaurants in Bengaluru and two in Delhi at that time, and that it planned further expansion to Mumbai, Pune, Chandigarh, Hyderabad and Chennai.[5]

In August 2023, ET HospitalityWorld reported that Chowman had 21 outlets in Kolkata, six in Bengaluru and four in Delhi-NCR, and was preparing to enter Mumbai, Chennai and Hyderabad.[6]

In May 2024, ETRetail reported that Chowman had 35 outlets across Kolkata, Bengaluru, Delhi and Hyderabad. The report also stated that Chowman Hospitality was planning to file for an initial public offering by the end of FY26.[7]

Operations

Chowman operates through dine-in restaurants, delivery services and cloud kitchens. Mint Lounge reported that the brand’s Bengaluru entry began through three cloud kitchens, while its Kolkata restaurants offered both dine-in and takeaway services.[8]

The chain has followed a company-owned and company-operated model. In 2022, The Telegraph reported that Chowman did not plan to franchise its outlets and intended to own and operate them directly.[9] ETRetail later reported that the company continued to follow the company-owned and company-operated model, with revenue coming from both delivery and dine-in operations.[10]
