Christopher Arsenault (February 19, 1960 – March 31, 2025) was an American animal rescuer and founder of the Happy Cat Sanctuary in Medford, Long Island, New York. [1][2][3]
Early life
Arsenault was born in Port Jefferson, New York, in 1960 to David and Renee Arsenault. Arsenault's family relocated to Port Washington during his elementary school years, where he and his siblings—Dave, Mark, Joseph, and Elizabeth—continued their education.[4][5]
Arsenault was deeply involved in his community, volunteering both as an Auxiliary Police Officer with the Port Washington Police Department and as a dedicated member of the PWFD Protection Engine Company.[6]
Happy Cat Sanctuary
A former NJ Transit conductor, Arsenault turned to animal rescue in 2006 after the tragic death of his 24-year-old son. He began by caring for a colony of 30 stray cats, which led to the creation of his sanctuary. He was often referred to as "The Cat Man."[7][8]
Arsenault became known for his deep commitment to animal welfare, often using his own resources to care for hundreds of abandoned or abused cats. [9]
By 2025, his sanctuary was home to approximately 300 cats, featuring heated shelters and other feline-friendly amenities.[10][11]
Death
On March 31, 2025, Arsenault died in a fire that broke out at the sanctuary. He was 65. The fire also killed over 100 cats, though many others survived. Authorities later confirmed the blaze was not suspicious, although the cause remained undetermined.[12]
Legacy
Arsenault's dedication earned him admiration from the animal rescue community around the world, and efforts to honor his legacy continue through ongoing support for the surviving cats and the sanctuary's future.[13]Template:Npov inline[14]
Donors from across the world have given nearly $800,000 in total to various support drives on behalf of Happy Cat and the cats who survived the fire.[10]
