Chris Greatti (born May 11, 1993) is a Grammy-nominated songwriter, music producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist.[1] He is best known for his work with Yungblud, Poppy, Grimes, and blink-182, producing and writing songs such as Yungblud's gold-certified singles "11 Minutes (feat. Halsey and Travis Barker),"[2] and "Parents",[3] Grimes' "We Appreciate Power,"[4] Poppy's Grammy-nominated album I Disagree,[5] blink-182's "Heaven",[6] and YUNGBLUD's "weird!".[7]
Early Life[edit]
Greatti grew up as a rock guitarist in Morrisville, Pennsylvania,[8] and spent his teen years obsessing over Van Halen and Led Zeppelin's early records (learning every song note-for-note) and simultaneously studying modern pop records made by Max Martin and Lady Gaga. A year after graduating high school, his first band signed with Capitol Records,[9] which provided him the opportunity to work with several legendary, Grammy-award winning producers, including Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam, AC/DC, The Killers), David Kahne[10] (The Strokes, The Bangles), Eric Valentine (Queens of the Stone Age, Smash Mouth) and Machine (Lamb Of God, King Crimson). As he found his own footing with production, he began blending techniques learned from his collaborators with his own instincts to create a unique sound and musical perspective that fuses classic musicianship and arranging with modern songwriting, mixing and hooks.
Career[edit]
As of summer 2020, Greatti's songs and productions have accrued over half a billion streams on Spotify. His professional production career began in mid-2018, when his longtime creative friendship with Poppy led to a collaboration with Grimes,[11] which led to management interest from Interscope Records' Nick Groff, who quickly connected Greatti to Yungblud.
In 2019, he co-produced, co-wrote and played every instrument on Poppy's critically-acclaimed progressive pop-metal album I Disagree[12] alongside his friend and frequent collaborator Zakk Cervini (5SOS, Blink 182).[13] NME said, "'I Disagree'[14] is [Poppy's] most accomplished record, full of daring theatre and snarling forward motion,"[15] while Pitchfork noted "…it's striking—as the world burns and nuclear war once more feels like a distinct possibility—to hear a reminder that chaos can be cleansing."[16]
In 2020, he executive produced and co-wrote the upcoming Yungblud album Weird![17], again with Cervini, which features the single "Strawberry Lipstick,"[18] described by Clash as "impossible to ignore… [it] boldly unpicks the lingering psychic damage caused by growing up in a caustic heteronormative society."[19]
Greatti is currently working on new music with Poppy, Palaye Royale,[20] Pussy Riot,[21] Dorian Electra,[22] Slayyyter,[23] Kelsy Karter,[24] Bonavega,[25] Brasko,[26] his own band Blame Candy,[27] and more.
He has toured and performed for hire with David Lee Roth, Yves Tumor,[28][29] Sky Ferreira, Poppy, and more on lead guitar/backing vocals.
His influences range widely from Queen,[30] Blur and Van Halen,[31] to Max Martin, Sophie and Mike WILL Made-It, Radiohead and Tame Impala,[32] to Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar and Frank Ocean, to the Beatles and Jellyfish.
