Chris Schade (born 14 May 1990) is an American professional rugby union player. He currently plays hooker for New Orleans Gold in Major League Rugby (MLR)[1] and for the American Raptors in Super Rugby Americas (SRA).[2]

Early Days[edit]

Chris grew up in Canfield, Ohio, near Youngstown. He went to Canfield High School from 2005 to 2008 and played hockey and football. He then attended Ohio University from 2008 to 2012 and played rugby. He captained the side and was named to the first all-MAC team in 2012.[3][4]

Amateur Career[edit]

After college, he moved to Columbus to train with Tiger Academy. He also played club 7s with 1823 and club 15s with Scioto Valley. He has represented the USA South in 15s and Atlantis in 7s. He is currently a player coach and is often team captain for the Midwest Thunderbirds.[5][6][7]

Professional Career[edit]

He made his professional rugby debut with the Ohio Aviators in 2016, played with Burnside RFC in the Christchurch New Zealand Metro Division 1 Hawkins Cup in 2017, Austin Elite (now Austin Gilgronis) from 2018 to 2020, and San Diego Legion from 2021 to 2022.[8]

He signed with New Orleans Gold this past offseason to add depth for the MLR 2023 season.[9] He also signed on with the American Raptors for their 2023 Super Rugby Americas campaign, making him the first player to compete in all 3 American professional rugby competitions (PRO, MLR & SRA).[10][11]
