Chris Wilkinson-Smith (born 1970) is a New Zealand lawyer with extensive experience in criminal law, both in defence and prosecution. He is based in Whanganui, where he co-founded Wilkinson Smith Lawyers.
Early life and education
Wilkinson-Smith graduated in 1995 with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration (BCA). He furthered his legal education by completing a Master of Laws (LLM) in 2022 from Victoria University of Wellington.[1]
Legal career
In 1998, Wilkinson-Smith became a partner at Auld Brewer Mazengarb McEwen. He transitioned to the private bar in 2005, practicing as a defence barrister in Auckland. Throughout his career, he has appeared in all jurisdictions, including the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court, handling cases across the full spectrum of criminal law.[1]
In 2016, he co-founded Wilkinson Smith Lawyers in Whanganui. The firm is responsible for prosecuting all serious criminal offenses in the Whanganui region and advises government departments, including the Police, Corrections, and the Department of Internal Affairs.[2]
Following the appointment of his wife, Michele Wilkinson-Smith, as a High Court Judge in February 2024, Wilkinson-Smith served as the Acting Crown Solicitor for Whanganui until October 2024.[3]
Professional involvement
Wilkinson-Smith has been actively involved in various professional organisations. He is the immediate past president of the Criminal Bar Association and has been a member of the New Zealand Law Society's Litigation Skills Faculty since 2001. Additionally, he served as an Appeals Adjudicator for the Real Estate Agents Disciplinary Tribunal and was the New Zealand Law Society Branch President from 2021 to 2023.[1]
Personal life
Wilkinson-Smith is married to Michele Wilkinson-Smith, a High Court Judge. They have four children.
