Felix Egmont Geiringer (born 1971) is a New Zealand lawyer, and former student politician, Rhodes Scholar, and mathematician.[1] He is the Wellington vice-president of the New Zealand Bar Association,[2] and a member of Lambton Chambers in Wellington.[3]
Legal career[edit]
Geiringer was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2005.[4] He worked in the litigation team at Chapman Tripp in Wellington, before moving to London in 2007,[5] where he worked as an associate in the banking regulation team at Clifford Chance.[6] He was admitted as a solicitor of England and Wales in 2007.[7] In 2009, Geiringer was called to the bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of Lincoln's Inn.[8] He practised as a barrister in London out of 1 Grey's Inn Square Chambers, and Doughty Street Chambers.[6]
Geiringer returned to New Zealand in 2011 and began practice as a barrister at Terrace Chambers in Wellington.[1] In 2019, he moved to Lambton Chambers.[9]
Notable cases[edit]
- Arnold v Stuff Ltd [2018] NZHC 1641. Geiringer represented the mayor of Invercargill, Sir Tim Shadbolt, in defending a defamation claim by Invercargill City Councillor, Karen Arnold.[10][11][12][13][14] Arnold's claims were dismissed by a jury after a three-week trial, and that decision was upheld by the High Court.[10]
- Waho v Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust [2018] NZHC 1935. Geiringer represented former trustee of Te Kōhanga Reo National Trust, Toni Waho, in his High Court case against the trust board.[15][16] Waho obtained a declaration that his removal from the trust had been unlawful.[15][17] The High Court found that Waho acted “with a sense of personal integrity” and “in conformity with the contractual and fiduciary obligation on each member of the Board”.[15][18][19] He was awarded unpaid honorarium and over half a million dollars in costs.[20][21][22]
- Hager v The Attorney-General [2015] NZHC 3268. Geiringer represented investigative journalist, Nicky Hager, in his case against the New Zealand Police.[23][24][25] In what was described as a "landmark case", Hager obtained a declaration that the warrant the police obtained to search his home was unlawful.[26][27] Geiringer later negotiated a settlement in which the police accepted that they had committed multiple unlawful acts in obtaining and executing the warrant, apologised to Hager, and paid him "substantial" damages and costs.[28][29][30] Geiringer also negotiated a settlement for Hager's daughter,[31][32] and for Hager in a related claim against Westpac.[33] [34][35][36][37][38]
- New Zealand Māori Council v Attorney-General (Water) [2013] 3 NZLR 31; [2013] NZSC 6. Geiringer represented the New Zealand Māori Council in stage one of the urgent National Fresh Water and Geothermal Resources Inquiry before the Waitangi Tribunal,[39] and in the related judicial review proceedings before the High Court and Supreme Court.[40][41][42][1]
