Christine Marie Fraga is a Cuban-American businesswoman and politician who serves on the Miami-Dade County School Board. She previously served as a council member for the City of Doral, Florida..[1]

In November 2012, Fraga was elected in a run-off to become a Doral city council member, winning 53.58% of the vote.[2]

In November 2020, Fraga went on to defeat Mara Zapata in the 2020 Miami-Dade County School Board race with about 56% of the vote to become School Board Member from District 5.[3]

Early life and education[edit]

Christi Fraga was born in Miami, Florida to a Cuban-American family that immigrated from Cuba to the United States. Fraga attended St. Brendan High School where she graduated with honors in 2005.[4] Following high school, she graduated from Miami-Dade College with an associate's degree in business administration and later a bachelor's degree in finance management and accounting from Florida International University, where she currently sits on the President's Council.[5][6]

In 2010, Fraga married her college sweetheart, Gabriel Fraga, and had a son together in 2016.[4][7]

Career[edit]

Fraga began her career as an entrepreneur. She and her husband opened their successful ice cream shop in Doral, Brain Freeze Nitrogen Ice Cream & Yogurt Lab, a "place for you to come in and make your own ice cream."[8] The need for a local shop "where families could gather for a great ice cream cone, sundae or shake" was on top of Fraga's mind when choosing her first location.[9]

In 2012, Fraga announced her candidacy for the Doral city council. Defeating former Doral Vice Mayor Robert Van Name, Fraga became the youngest member to serve on Doral's city council.[10]

Envisioning "a group of youth in the community that want to make a difference," Fraga drafted and passed an ordinance in the city council to create the City of Doral Youth Advisory Board.[11] In 2014, Fraga and former Florida International University President Mark Rosenberg had a meeting to create a transit system between the City of Doral and Florida International University that offers trolley services to anyone going to or coming from FIU.[12] After a feasibility study, the Doral city council passed a resolution to create and fund the new trolley route with services to and from FIU.[13] Fraga later passed a proposal in Doral for the Take Stock in Children mentorship program, and "as part of the program, TSIC will identify eligible, deserving students at Ronald Reagan/Doral High School and pairs them with City employees, who commit to serving as mentors to these students for one hour per week."[14]

During her tenure as a Doral city council member, she was named as vice mayor in three of the eight years that she served on the city council.[15]

In 2020, Fraga announced her campaign to succeed Susie Castillo on the Miami-Dade County School Board, as board member from District 5. Fraga led in the August 2020 primary election with a 38.88% plurality, forcing a run-off in the November 2020 general election.[16] In November, Fraga went on to defeat former Miami Springs vice mayor Mara Zapata in the run-off with a 55.66% majority.[17]

While on the School Board, Fraga passed an item that sought to direct the Superintendent to partner with outside organizations and allocate Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Funds (ESSER) to mental health seminars for high schoolers in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.[18]

In 2022, Fraga announced her candidacy to succeed Mayor Juan Carlos Bermudez as the next Mayor of Doral.[19]
