Christian Taylor Jessup (born 19 January 1996) is an American film score composer and musician. Since 2016, he has composed music for seven films. His works include The Dancin’ Bulldogs, for which he was nominated at the North Carolina Film Critics Association Awards in 2020, The Called, and Farewell: A Kobe Bryant Documentary.

A graduate of Gardner-Webb University, Jessup has received several accolades for his music and music research, and spent the summer of 2017 interning at Hans Zimmer's film company, Remote Control Productions.[1]

Early life and Education[edit]

Jessup was born and raised in North Carolina. He began music lessons at a young age[2], and graduated from Crest High School in 2014. That same year, Jessup won a competition in which he wrote music for a Holocaust Commemoration Ceremony in Raleigh, sponsored by the North Carolina Council on the Holocaust.[3]

Jessup completed his undergraduate degree in Music Composition and Film at Gardner-Webb University, named Outstanding Male Graduate in 2018.[4] During his time at Gardner-Webb, he released an instrumental album, scored two documentary short films (Whose Dominion and Galapagos Suite) and won multiple awards for his musical score entitled Star Wars: A New Score.

Career[edit]

Star Wars: A New Score[edit]

In the summer of 2016, Jessup began working on a new project entitled Star Wars: A New Score in which he wrote an entirely new musical score to the 1977 film, Star Wars. The project involved writing a score that would improve upon certain areas of John Williams' original score, specifically in regards to character continuity and music placement. Certain sound effects and dialogue were removed from the original film and then re-inserted to ensure that Williams' score was not present in the new version of the film.[5]

A scene from Jessup's score, "Assault on the Death Star," was performed live by the Gardner-Webb University Community Orchestra on December 5, 2016. [6] The film itself premiered on December 8, 2016 at Gardner-Webb University.

The research and music for the film went on to win 5 awards from various organizations, including the Alexander Bendazzi National Prize in Art / Music / Dance. June Hobbs, Director of Undergraduate Research, said, “Christian came in first of the 65 submissions with nearly perfect scores from all judges.”[7]

Film Composer[edit]

In 2017, Jessup was an intern at Hans Zimmer’s film score studio, Remote Control Productions.[8] Along with administrative work, Jessup was able to “sit-in” on composers, mixers, and arrangers each week in order to watch them create music.[9] “For me, Zimmer is the standard for music in Hollywood right now, and I believe Remote Control Productions is an important part of the future of film music,” Jessup said. “As cliché as it may sound, the opportunity to work for RCP and Zimmer was a dream come true.” [10]

In 2020, Jessup’s first original feature film came from a project he directed and produced alongside fellow Gardner-Webb filmmakers.[11] Jessup composed the score for the critically acclaimed documentary The Dancin’ Bulldogs, based on the Gardner-Webb Men’s Basketball team’s incredible trip to the NCAA Tournament. [12] NCFCA member Mallory Moore praised the film's music, saying “Jessup’s uplifting score, which highlights the emotional map of the season and brings the most intense moments to life, also rounds out the documentary’s clear narrative.” [13] The film was nominated for the Ken Hanke Memorial Tar Heel Award at the 2020 North Carolina Film Critics Association Awards.[14] The award honored Jessup and the other filmmakers for their special connection to North Carolina. [15]

Other Music[edit]

Since 2018, Jessup has written music for VisionPoint Marketing in their radio and television advertisements.[16] VisionPoint is a marketing agency solely focused on marketing for higher education, and Jessup’s music can be heard in advertisements for institutions including Worcester State University, College of DuPage, and the Alabama Community College System. [17]
