Christian Palustran was born in 1947 near Paris, in Saint-Cloud. He is a French playwright and storyteller. His works – some of which are written for youth – have been performed and broadcast in France and several other countries..[1][2][3]

Early Life and Overview

Christian Palustran grew up around Paris. He developed a passion for writing and drama at an early age. As a youth, he played guitar, composed songs, and enjoyed the works of Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. After completing his undergraduate studies, he was appointed a teacher in Normandy and soon began putting on shows and leading writing workshops with students from elementary school through university grades.[4][5][6]

Around this same time, he began developing his own texts. Two of his early works, Escapade and Story of an Egg, were rewarded with performances at the National One-Act Festival in Metz (France).[7][8][9][10][11]

A proponent of quality amateur theater,[12][13] he has been invited to festivals in France and other countries, notably in the United States, Canada [14], and Belgium, where he talks on his speciality and where his plays are often performed. Two of them, A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx and The Misdeeds of Bourbon, represented France at the IATA International Estivades in Belgium.[15][16] Another play, The Trap, was performed at the first Namur International Festival (Belgium).[17] Likewise, A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx participated in the Spanish University Festival in Valladolid.[18]

Proficient in several languages[19], he has translated other authors 21 and assisted in the translation of his own work. He also supports the Francophonie, the organization of countries with French as an official or important language. As such, he is often the host of French Alliances or Institutes[20]. Since 2009, he has annually chaired the Francophone Festival La Première in Kirov, Russia.[21][22][23]

Storyteller

Christian Palustran is the author of several collections of short stories: The Good People's Twilight[24], The Tales of the Crescent Moon, and Metamorphoses, My Love, a contemporary treatment of Ovid[25]. Drawing inspiration from classic tales, these "strands of dreams," as the author calls them, often ironically highlight or comment on contemporary themes and problems. Many of his stories have been broadcast on French-speaking radio stations and the France-Culture radio channel[26]. They have been interpreted by some of France’s leading performers, including Michel Bouquet, Michel Galabru, Michael Lonsdale, Judith Magre, François Périer, Jean Rochefort, among others. They have also been recited or performed in public, in particular by Claude Piéplu at the National Festival of Storytellers of Chevilly-la-Rue, Alsace and Normandy.[27][28][29]

Playwright

Christian Palustran has written some thirty plays of various genres[30], which critics have said can be "funny, tender and sometimes fierce" (cf.Vers L’Avenir and La Voix de l'Est[31]). Many have been performed in France and in French-speaking countries. In France, venues include:

His plays have also been performed in Belgium (Brussels[50] and Wallonia[51][52][53]), in Switzerland[54][55], and in Canada[56]

Several were broadcast on radio (France-Culture[57][58][59], Radio Suisse Romande, and Radio France Internationale).

Some of his plays have been translated and performed abroad. In the United States, A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx was performed at the off-off Broadway 13th street Repertory Theater [60], Escapade won first prize at the New York International playwriting competition, and Dogdaze was selected for a public reading[61]. In addition, The Hood Case was staged in Massachusetts (Herring Run Festival, 1993).

Others have been performed in Argentina[62], Russia[63][64][65], Bulgaria[66], and Romania[67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74].

He is also the author of tragic monologues (Diary of a Werewolf, Cloud, Abyss[85]) and social dramas (Dogdaze, in the program of a university in Argentina 64), Escapade, A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx, The Trap, A Peaceful Evening, Linda…).

Christian Palustran is also interested in theatre for young people[86]. With false naivete or more directly, his works tackle contemporary problems, sometimes at the risk of being surprising or disturbing (A Yellow Butterfly Called Sphinx[87][88][89]).
