Christian W. Staudinger
Christian Wilhelm Staudinger (born 1952)[1] is a Berlin-based German artist whose work arises in large part from his experiences of imprisonment in and escape from the former East Germany.
Early life and education[edit]
Staudinger was born in Erfurt in then-Communist East Germany.[1]} His parents ran a series of hotels and restaurants; they lived in Schmira , a former village that had been incorporated into Erfurt, until 1956, when they became the managers of the Bayerischer Hof in Waltershausen. After attending school in Waltershausen, he trained as a waiter at the Handelsorganisation in Erfurt.[1][non-primary source needed]
Leaving East Germany and career[edit]
In 1971, Staudinger attempted to escape from East Germany via Bulgaria. He was captured and returned to East Germany, where he was imprisoned; he was tortured by the Stasi both before and after his repatriation.[2][3][4][5] In 1972, West Germany paid for his extradition under a prisoner trading programme.[1] His brother, Ulrich, subsequently also crossed to West Germany.
In West Berlin, Staudinger studied to be a deacon in the Lutheran Church and then completed his Abitur as an adult and subsequently studied social work at the Evangelische Hochschule Berlin and philosophy, psychology and sociology at the Free University. He also trained in skydiving and in the 1990s as a skydiving instructor.[1][non-primary source needed] He became a probation officer in a women's prison.[1][non-primary source needed]
Staudinger was an artist while in school. He returned to art in the 1980s, including painting, sculpture, video, and conceptual art, and it became his primary focus in 1986. He studied sculpture at the Freie Kunstschule Berlin and in Italy with Peter Rosenzweig.[1][non-primary source needed] He started a private press, Zwielicht-Verlag, with which he published two illustrated books of poetry, Zustände eines Grenzverletzers in 1983 and Über mir bin es in 1989.[6] He took part in the Freie Berliner Kunstausstellung from 1983 to 1995 and was a member of a group of artists called Blindflug.[7]
Staudinger's art arises from political engagement, especially from his experiences of political resistance, flight, and imprisonment.[4][5] In 1994 he was one of 500 entrants in the competition to design the Berlin Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.[8] In 2007 he presented his artwork on Hitler and Nazism, titled Unerträgliches Ertragen, in Charlottenburg.[9] In 2008, a report by Helmuth Frauendorfer and Nadja Storz was broadcast on German television (Das Erste) in Fakt (Magazin) under the title Todesschüsse an der Bulgarischen Grenze, which reported on Staudinger's escape from Bulgaria and his artistic realization of these experiences.[10] He created paintings for a 2014 commemorative exhibition on the Stasi in Erfurt.[4][11][12] In 2018, Kapka Kassabova presented under moderation of Philipp Blom her book The Last Border at Bruno Kreisky Forum , in which she tells in the figure of Felix the story of Staudinger's escape.[13]
