Christopher Hourigan, DM, DPhil is a physician-scientist at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. He is the Chief of the Laboratory of Myeloid Malignancies".[1]
Dr. Hourigan has published over 90 scientific papers [2] focusing on measurable residual disease (MRD; previously termed minimal residual disease) and the genomic landscape of acute myeloid leukemia.[3][4][5][6][7]
Education
Dr. Hourigan graduated from Oxford University Medical School and received his DPhil for work with Sir John Bell (physician) at the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University. He completed postdoctoral clinical training at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in London, Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, and the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore[1]. He is ABIM board certified in Internal Medicine, Hematology, and Medical Oncology.
Honors and awards
In 2019, Dr. Hourigan received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest U.S. government honor for scientists and engineers beginning independent research careers for his research on Measurable Residual Disease in Acute Myeloid Leukemia [8]
The work of his laboratory showing that treatment intensification could improve survival for some patients with Acute Myeloid Leukemia Measurable Residual Disease was selected for plenary presentation as best late-breaking abstract at the Presidential Symposium of the 24th European Hematology Association (EHA) Congress in Amsterdam[9][10][11][12][13], published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology as a rapid communication on the basis of "immediate practice changing potential" [14][15][16][17], awarded the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute Orloff Award, and honored as one of the top NIH accomplishments of 2020.
