Chuan Zhi(traditional Chinese:釋傳智; simplified Chinese 释传智 ; Shì Chuán Zhi) is a Chinese Chan Buddhist Rinzai or Linji school master.[1]

Significance[edit]

Chuan Zhi (given name, Steven), was ordained by Jy Ding (pictured right), at the ceremony marking the full opening of Hsu Yun Temple on November 8th, 1997 (pictured left). The name 'Chuan Zhi' bears resemblance to Jy Ding's own[2], a signal that Jy Ding wanted Chuan Zhi to be his spiritual successor. He was ordained again in 1998 as a monk, or bhikṣu at China's Hongfa Temple, Shenzhen, by ten masters, including Jy Ding and Benhuan. This was an honour recognised by the Buddhist Association of China. He was the first American-born practitioner to be added to Xuyun's Linji school lineage in the United States — a lineage which may not have survived the transition to the West had it not been for his work.[3] [4] [5]
