Churchill Alternative School is an Ottawa-Carleton District School Board elementary school in the Westboro neighbourhood of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and an alternative school. It first opened its doors to the community in 1984.

The 310 students enrolled at the school are part of an alternative education program. This program aims to emphasize cooperation rather than competition[4], by differing from standard forms of teaching. As of 2020, the school is one of five alternative schools in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board[5] Churchill has one gymnasium, with a functioning stage. The yard is composed of a set of structures in a sandbox, a large concrete surface, a wooden stage, and a forested hill behind the stage that is known as "Back to Nature"[2]. In 2019 and 2020 teachers at Churchill took part in protests against Doug Ford's education cuts.[6][7]

Graduating students attend a number of middle and high schools including Summit Alternative School, Fisher Park Public School, Notre Dame High School (Ottawa), and Immaculata High School (Ottawa).

Extra-curricular[edit]

Churchill operates multiple extra-curricular activities within the boundaries of the alternative system. The music program runs multiple clubs, including a Ukulele Club, Guitar Club, and Primary Choir[8]. An annual rock concert called "Churchill School of Rock" has been performed by a choir and band of volunteer students for 14 years[9]. The concert was created to get students interested in music, and it has become a favourite of current and former Churchillians alike[10][11]. A new shirt is designed for each School of Rock, as well as pins and other merchandise[11]. The Churchill School of Rock event was cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Sports are also promoted at Churchill, both inside and outside of school hours. The gymnasium is used for Physical Education classes and the students go on runs in the morning. The school runs multiple extra-curricular sports teams at the Primary and Junior levels, including track and field, cross-country running, volleyball, basketball, and bordenball.[2]

Fundraising[edit]

Churchill has participated in multiple fundraising events throughout its history. It holds annual Craft Fairs, where local makers can sell jewellery, knits, woodwork, leather purses, ornaments, handmade soaps, and more[12]. It also runs an annual Plant and Book Sale. [13] In 2018 a $130,000 fundraiser was held to replace the schoolyard structures[14] and in 2019 the school installed three new structures.
