Kim "Chyuyeyeo" Ji-woo (Hangul: 김지우; Hanja: 金智雨; born October 20, 1999), mononymously known as Chuu, is a South Korean singer from the girl group Loona and its sub-unit, Loona yyxy, both formed by Blockberry Creative.

Early Life

Chuu was born on October 20, 1999, in Cheongju, North Chungcheong, South Korea. Her stage name "Chuu" comes from the fact that if you keep saying the real name "jiu" repeatedly, it will eventually sound like "chu". She also has two younger brothers. As a child, Chuu did taekwondo and earned a third-degree black belt while attending Cheongju's Saet-byul Elementary school (샛별초등학교) and San-nam Middle school (산남중학교).

In February 2018, she and her Loona groupmate Kim Lip graduated from Hanlim Multi Art School. She was also best friends with Momoland's JooE.

Career

2015: Pre-debut

In 2015, Chuu sang Princess Pring OST "We Wanna Be Adults" (어른이 되고 싶어) before making her debut as a member of Loona.

2017-present: Debut with Loona and solo activities

On December 14, 2017, Chuu was revealed as the tenth member of Loona. On December 28, she released her self-titled single album with "Heart Attack" as its title track. She was introduced as part of Loona's third sub-unit Loona yyxy. The sub-unit consists of members Yves, Gowon and Olivia Hye. The sub-unit debuted with the EP, Beauty & the Beat on May 30, 2018.

Loona officially debuted as a full ensemble with the pre-release digital single, "Favorite" on August 7, 2018. On August 20, the group released their debut EP, [+ +] with "Hi High" as its lead single.

On May 10, 2019, Chuu made her acting debut and starred in the web-drama Dating Class as Han Eun-sol, a "hackinssa" who boasts her overflowing aegyo and cute looks.

In March 2021, Chuu appeared as the 31st model for a television commercial of Dong-a Otsuka's Pocari Sweat. She also appeared in a television commercial of Samsung Galaxy Store in May 2021 and South Korean chicken brand "Chicken Maru" in June 2021.

Bullying allegations

In the wake of a wave of bullying accusations against various stars of the South Korean K-pop industry Chuu was one of the people who were accused of school bullying in February 2021. However, the accuser apologized for the false claims, as they turned out to be groundless.

Media reception

Heart Attack video

Chuu's music video for her song Heart Attack released in 2017 gained praise by fans of K-pop for its depiction of a seemingly lesbian relationship between Chuu herself and fellow Loona member Yves which is a rare case in the K-pop industry, although there has been no affirmation of their sexuality or allyship by the company or the members themselves. However, other people have stated that Heart Attack rather than being a positive representation of LGBT love, used the depiction of homoerotic love as a way to garner more fan interest.
