Cian Riordan is an Irish–American audio engineer, mixer, and producer based in Los Angeles.[1] He has worked with acclaimed artists including St. Vincent, Lana Del Rey, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, and Sleater-Kinney. Riordan has contributed to Grammy-winning projects such as Daddy’s Home (2021) and All Born Screaming (2024).[2]
Early life and education
Riordan was born in Cork, Ireland, and grew up in Northern California.[3] He studied chemistry at U.C. Santa Cruz and went on to work for noted record producer Eric Valentine at Barefoot Recording, later creating a longstanding creative partnership with Annie Clark (St. Vincent).
Career
Riordan’s career spans engineering, mixing, and occasional production across rock, alternative, and pop. He became a frequent collaborator with St. Vincent, contributing to the single “Pay Your Way in Pain” and the album Daddy’s Home, and later mixing and engineering All Born Screaming.[4][5]
Riordan also engineered Billy Joel’s comeback single “Turn the Lights Back On”.[6]
Recognition
Riordan has won two Grammy Awards. One for mixing St. Vincent's Daddy’s Home, which won the for Best Alternative Music Album (2021)[7]and a second for engineering and mixing All Born Screaming, which won a total of three Grammys in 2024: Best Alternative Album, Best Rock Song (“Broken Man”), and Best Alternative Performance (“Flea”).[8]
