Cindy Li, known as Ciel, is a Canadian DJ, promoter, and musician working in Toronto, Ontario. She is known for her "dreamy" sound and eclectic selections in her DJ sets, as well as for her advocacy for a more inclusive dance music scene in Toronto.[1][2]
Career
Li was born in Xi'an[3] and grew up near Albany, New York[2] but moved to Toronto as a teenager. She studied at Queen's University at Kingston, where she first became involved in radio, hosting a program called Ladyflash on the campus radio station CFRC-FM, where she played music made by women. She started DJing electronic music in Toronto in 2011, and in 2015 started a show called Work In Progress on the short-lived Toronto Radio Project, an online radio station. The same year she began playing regularly at Toronto venue Bambi's and organized her first party, the beginning of her work as a promoter[1]. In 2016 Work in Progress transformed into a series of mixes and events which similarly focused on female-identifying artists. She further expanded her work as a promoter, organizing the It's Not U It's Me collective with fellow DJ Gingy (Brian Wong), which threw parties in unusual venues[4].
