SPS Cigaronne, LLC (commonly known as Cigaronne) is an Armenian private company that manufactures and sells tobacco and alcohol products.[11] The company is headquartered in Yerevan, Armenia. Established in 1999, it is one of the oldest and largest tobacco companies in post-Soviet Armenia.[12][13][14] Cigaronne operates in around 30 countries, and its main cigarette and alcohol brands include Center, AMG, 5th Street, Cigaronne Phantom, Compatto and "Godfather" vodka brands.[15][16]
History[edit]
SPS Cigaronne LLC was founded in 1999 by Simon and Seiran Pogossian,[3] who opened the company's main office and manufacturing facility in Yerevan, Armenia. Unlike the other major tobacco companies in Armenia, which sprang off from the Soviet infrastructure or through the merge with the foreign tobacco producers,[14] Cigaronne was a new enterprise created tabula rasa.[17][12][18] Cigaronne first introduced Hollow Filter technology in its cigarettes in 2000.[19]
Following the financial and marketing issues and temporary idling, SPS Cigaronne resumed production in 2013 with the help of the Armenian government, that supported the company with temporary tax relief and export benefits.[20][21] In 2014, the company rebranded, also introducing new cigarette brands based on the US patented technology.[22] In 2015, Cigaronne collaborated with Arssi Alliance company on alcohol production of two new brands of vodka: Godfather Premium and Godfather Platinum.[23][24][25]
In February 2016, Cigaronne joined the American Chamber of Commerce in Armenia.[13] The company received a number of industry accolades, including Mercury International Award (2015),[16] among others.[26]
Operations[edit]
SPS CIGARONNE is a private company with LLC corporate registration. The company's main offices are located at 24 A Hovhanissian St., Yerevan, Armenia.[5] The company also has a brand shop Simariss in the capital and multiple distributors in the other countries.[6]
Issues[edit]
In May 2017, State Fiscal Service of the Republic of Ukraine confiscated a large consignment of Cigaronne tobacco products at the customs office of Odessa, allegedly on the basis that they were transported without excise taxes labels. However, the company claimed that the consignment was legal and filed a lawsuit with the Ukrainian court.[27][28][29]
In 2017, the Armenian government requested from Russia to postpone the introduction of the technical regulation for its tobacco producers until July 15 2018 due to the presence of a huge amount of products of local producers for the domestic market. According to the new requirements, tobacco manufacturers had to place warning labels with "frightening pictures" of a larger size on the front side of cigarette packs that would take 50% of the surface. Cigaronne company claimed it was not ready for the change and requested the assistance of the Armenian government to postpone the regulation for its products.[30][31] Eventually, the postponement request was granted[32] and in 2019 the company began production of the cigarettes with new labels for the export to Russia.[33]
