Claire Boonstra
Claire Boonstra (born 1975) is a Dutch engineer and entrepreneur. She is best known for her work as co-founder of the augmented reality company Layar. She holds an MSc in Civil Engineering from Delft University of Technology. Boonstra was born in the Netherlands, and speaks five languages: Dutch, English, Spanish, French, and German. She is also the founder of Operation Education,[1] a non-profit organization focused on education and changing the way society views education.
Biography
Before becoming an entrepreneur and being recognized as one of the 'Most Influential Women in Technology',[2] a 'Young Global Leader,' and a 'Rising Talent,' Boonstra worked as a corporate employee for KPN, a Dutch telecommunications company, and Unilever, a global consumer goods company. Apart from her contributions as an entrepreneur and innovator, Boonstra is a mother of three. She describes herself as a "utopist dreamer, asker of difficult questions, visionary, improv dancer, skier, and former glider pilot."[3] In 2011, Boonstra was nominated as a World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer.[4] These pioneers are typically in the startup stage and are seen as having the potential to significantly impact both business and society. Having been repeatedly listed as one of the most influential women in technology, her contributions to technology have had a significant impact.
Career
Boonstra has over fifteen years of experience working with engineering, technology, media, and networking. She has worked for companies including Unilever, KPN, Talpa Digital, and others. In 2009, Layar was founded and quickly became a global leader in augmented reality and interactive print. Boonstra co-founded Layar alongside Raimo van der Klein and Maarten Lens-FitzGerald. In September 2012, Boonstra founded Operation Education. Her goal with Operation Education is to promote the transition from traditional teaching to lifelong learning for all subjects, not just those tested in schools. Boonstra is a frequent speaker, judge, and advisor.

As a co-founder of a leading technology company, Boonstra played a key role in Layar's success. Layar is an augmented reality technology solution and service company based in the Netherlands. Boonstra and her co-founders developed a unique mobile browser allowing consumers to search various items using augmented reality technology.
